journey of one man

Sydney Harbour Bridge

I had the pleasure of walking across Sydney harbour bridge, but it wasn’t by choice, I was forced to walk in order to get to work because the train broke down at the last station before the bridge. Coincidentally today was the coldest day in the history of Sydney since 1950. You can always count on CityRail failing when it is raining, I guess it can’t deal with cold temperature as well :)

DRY Says That Every Piece of System Knowledge Should Have One Authoritative, Unambiguous Representation. Every Piece of Knowledge in the Development of Something Should Have a Single Representation. A System’s Knowledge Is Far Broader Than Just Its Code. It Refers to Database Schemas, Test Plans, the Build System, Even Documentation.

IDEA Is Better for Learning

For the last 2 weeks, I went back to use Eclipse and noted down what I missed most in Eclipse from IntelliJ IDEA. I was going to keep using it a bit longer but today when I had to figure out how stuff works at work I just couldn’t do it in Eclipse as fast as I could with IDEA so I’ve decided to activate IDEA again.

So overall, using Eclipse to code is fine but using it to learn or analyse an obscure app is just painful.

Rails Cookbook

I am proud to have been a technical reviewer and contributor to the Rails Cookbook by Rob Orsini. It was a valuable experience for me and I learned a lot while reviewing the book and sharing ideas with fellow contributors.

Coworking Space

This coworking space is a brilliant idea. The sydney rails coworking space for freelancers are already in motion. Even if I am not freelancing if work permits (pending on how flexible the employer is) I wouldn’t mind go work in coworking space every now and then.

Sandisk Cruzer Micro 4gb

I was so impressed with my Sandisk cruzer micro 512MB because it withstood the test of my daughter’s drooling & sucking I decided to get another Sandisk
when I upgrade.

So I had my eye on the micro 4gb stick for a while, I considered the titanium version, which is stronger (titanium shell) and faster (tho no official stats from Sandisk) but given my old micro was plenty tough I decided it wasn’t worth the extra $.

Today I finally got my new 4gb stick in mailbox, after unpackaging it I immediately noticed it doesn’t feel as sturdy as my old micro and is slightly bigger. I thought, that’s ok, I don’t really need my usb stick to be able to take much force. The new stick’s case design is different, the usb connector is retractable so it doesn’t need a lid so you won’t loose it.

So far I haven’t really used it, I erased the stick using OS X Disk Utility to get rid of the crap that came with it but I can’t seem to get rid of the U3 System which is a feature that only applies on windows. I knew about that before I bought it, what I didn’t realise is that to remove U3 you have to do it in windows, argh~~~~ I just want to use it as a storage device so no U3 for me. I guess I’ll have to wait until I get to work tomorrow to be able to uninstall it. Then that got me thinking…. what if my workplace doesn’t have windows? Then I’ll have to go thru more hassle to get rid of U3! humm… I am going to take that into consideration for my next usb flash drive.

Eclipse 3.3 More Bearable

hehe I decided to use Eclipse a bit more since the project at work is only setup for Eclipse and I can’t be bothered to setup Intellij IDEA for every project here since we use ClearCase here and it’s damn slow.

But with the latest Eclipse 3.3 release, it is getting a bit more bearable, both in terms of look & feel and workflow

Build Light

I like lava lamp, they look nice as build lights but they are more of a hassle to setup (especially in OZ since all the plugs and sockets you get from the US is different) or they are against workplace health & safety policies.

But more importantly I always thought all we need for build light is just a spare PC and monitor. Check out build-o-matic and team-piazza (thanks to Nat). Pity neither of them works at my current workplace :(
